Unclaimed Baggage

If you've ever lost your luggage on vacation, you might wonder where it ends up.

Unclaimed Luggage in Scottsboro, Alabama, came into being in 1970.

After at least 90 days of intensive tracking by the airlines, baggage is declared unclaimed. It is then sold to Unclaimed Baggage where it is re-sold to the public.

Check it out at www.unclaimedbaggage.com

You do not have a right to the luggage once it has been sold to Unclaimed Baggage.

One person actually re-purchased a personal item they thought was gone forever when they discovered it at the store.

Listed below are some tips to follow to ensure that your baggage doesn't end up as someone else's treasure:

1) If you can't find your luggage, go immediately to the proper airlines and file a lost luggage report.

2) Follow up with calls to the airlines to see if they have found your luggage and where it is.

3) Tie colored ribbons, yarn or some other brightly colored material on the handle of your luggage so that you will recognize it and possibly stop someone else from taking it.
(This worked for me. I have a red suitcase and someone thought it was theirs. I have bright colored yarn on the handle. They grabbed it off of the carousel, realized it was not theirs and left it sitting on the floor. Yes, I found it on the other side of the carousel on the floor. Everything was there, they just hadn't re-set it back on the carousel.)

4) Mark your information clearly on your luggage tags. Make sure your tags are up-to-date.

5) Leave a copy of your itinerary in your suitcase so if it does
get lost, whoever finds it will know where you are supposed to be or will be.

6) Make an inventory of all items in your suitcase in case you need to report it.

7) Never pack valuables in check in baggage.

8) Carry on Baggage - Check your overhead bins and make sure you don't forget something.
Also check overheads to the left and right of your overhead in case the one directly above you was full. For example, if you sit in row 27, but that overhead is full and you place your bag in row 23 overhead, make sure you check all overheads near your seat.

9) Check all zippers on your luggage and check for wear just in case they may have become damaged on your last trip.

These are just a few tips that will hopefully assist you in keeping your luggage out of the Unclaimed Baggage store.
